October 20, 2003my v6 has a rattling to it in which it gets louder as the engine heats up, does anyone have this same problem and know of a fix for it? i think it is coming from around the valve covers.
October 21, 2003Does the noise speed up and slow as you give it gas if so that sounds like it's internal ..... valve, lifter, timing chain. The fuel injectors are known for making noise on these engines also.
October 21, 2003the most comon problem with the Dakota's are the timing chain. there is a TSB on replacing it with an updated design with a tentioner. ill look for the TSB # when i get the chance.
here is post #100 im now a V8 Member!!!!!!
October 21, 2003hey dakota dan... what all did those roller rockers do for you?? i have heard they get rid of the valve chattering... noise from under the valve covers i think? did you get much more power?
October 22, 2003Eddie
It's probably the opposite of what you say, in the morning you get a little tapping noise till the lifters pump up. I had to re-adjust mine after 10k miles on them they started tapping more than usual. as for the power band they will kick in around 2k and up when the truck hits 3-3500 rpms it feels like it wants to keep on going pulls good.
I just ordered a SuperChip programer should be here today ;-)
October 22, 2003i wanted to get the superchip. i saw it on 1 site and it said 98 to 03 and mine is a 97... i dont see what the difference is though
October 22, 2003In 98 they changed from a gear drive speedo to electronic
It may be possable that the program would work on the engine but you couldn't change the speedo
October 22, 2003thanks for the help dakotadan. i guess ill have to call up someone or somethin and see if i can find out if it will work on my truck
February 6, 2006Yes I have a 3.9 in my 02 sxt that makes a tapping noise on the drivers side of the engine ,I have been a bit concerned about also. No one seems to know anything about it.
February 6, 2006Holy smoke!! This post was taken from the archives. lol
February 6, 2006Wow, first post and he dug that far back....... Now that is something even I wouldn't have done.... Good ? though..... wish I knew the answer.
February 11, 2006I had a similiar problem with my R/T! Check that the exhaust manifold heat shields are not vibrating against the motor mounts! Start the truck up, get your flash light out and watch/listen. It took awhile for me to find this. It was driving me crazy! Hope this helps.
