June 20, 2011Hey guys! For starters I have a 99 ram 1500 4x4 5.2L and am pulling `72 wilderness 18ft camper not sure what it weights. I took it camping this last weekend up at flamming gorge and to get there, there is a 10 mile section that is nothing but switchbacks and is uphill the hole way. my tranny temp light came on darn near the top so i stopped for about a half an hour to let her cool down, i do have an aftermarket tranny cooler that i had just put on this spring. any ideas to help keep this from happening again. and second the truck doesnt seem to have much guts pulling it anyway is there anything that i could do to help that especially with going up hills? btw the truck is stock, i did fix the plenum last fall before i found out about the hughs plenum fix.

June 20, 2011Since the trailer is that old it`s probably on the heavy side frame is wood, newer trailers are aluminum frame so they are much lighter. I looked at a 29` that weighs the same as my 19` `06 model
Anyway perhaps an electric fan on the trans cooler, if your not carrying much speed up the hill there is less airflow over the cooler.
June 20, 2011Im not carring much speed at all I think i was doing 30 up that steep area, and then on open level road i can get up 60, I will have to check out those fans, any idea on where to find one?
June 20, 2011Just do a search for transmission cooling fan, several options and price ranges will come up
June 21, 2011What differential gear ratio are you running
June 21, 2011stock 3.55 with 265 75 16 tires. i was think about switching to 4.10 but havent decided yet.
June 21, 2011The 4.10`s will improve towing but your going to lose gas mileage when not towing
June 21, 2011that is why i havent decided if im going to get them or not. I have been looking at get a cai, and new exhaust, doing the kegger mod and tb mod, plus getting a sc tuner. i dont know if there is anything else i should or shouldnt do?
June 21, 2011I tried the CAI, the exhaust, the superchips programmer, none of them made that much of an improvement for towing
You could always do what I did when I didn`t like how my truck towed..........I bought a diesel that can tow a 20,000 lb trailer
June 21, 2011that stuff i was just looking at doing anyway and didnt know how much it would help with towing. I would buy a diesel(which will be my next truck) but the wife wont let me for a few years so until then i will have to do what i can with what i got.
June 21, 2011I wasn`t supposed to get one for a few years either, but we went on a trip to Arizona and I complained the whole time about how it didn`t pull well on the hills so she said "why don`t you get a better truck for towing?"
As soon as we got back I started shopping.
