November 2, 2009My son bought a 99 dakota and has had it for two weeks. Now when you turn the key over it clicks. turn the key off and try again and it starts right up? I cleaned the battery connections because they had some kind of sludge on them and tried it 3 times. started right up. then about two hrs later it clicked again then started. any other ideas? thanks

November 2, 2009my guess would be bad battery or bad connections. check the connections to starter. could also be starter solenoid
November 2, 2009Replace the entire battery cables. I had this same problem. And the cables were corroded under the plastic covering, the parts you can`t see.
The ground cable, you can pick up at autozone. But, the red ( hot side) you need to order one from the dealer because of the things that splice into it.
But i can almost bet money that one of the cables is your problem. For me, it was the hot cable.
November 3, 2009Called the stealership today and you were right, they want 60 bones for the ground and 70 for the positive???? Fn stealerships are a bunch of azzholes. Do you think there is a chance they can be cleaned with baking soda?
November 3, 2009Hey $60-70 isnt bad for cables.thats be cheap insurance for the problems its causing. ive seen others for alot more money. if you get the genaric cables you will have to splice alot of crap into it where the OE will basicly be plug and play.
I would also agree it does sound like the cables and or starter...
