July 8, 2009im keeping my hemi but im buying a 97 3500 diesel on sat. for 3000.00 its rough but it'll pull water out of concrete. cant beat used truck prices right now.
July 9, 2009HEMIsphere, I can understand what you are trying to say, but they don't cost any more to own. Sure oil changes are twice as much, but you do them half as often or less. I am running mine 15,000 miles on petroleum oil changes, so $45 bucks for maintenance in 15k. I also use fuel additive, so that adds over a gasser, and $15 for a fuel filter every 15k. We drive the diesel as much as possible because it is alot cheaper to drive and maintain than the durango that gets 15. My diesels get 20 mpg on the 3500 4x4 six speed and 24mpg on the 2500 2wd auto.
July 10, 2009It's really simple, diesels are made for towing. Torque is what gets you moving and the diesel has 50% more and it's available below 1500 rpms.
July 10, 2009I haul a 10# and more often a 7# trailer. Cutting firewood year round. I have a 07 ctd and my friend has a 05 hemi. He struggles and I am breezing by. I have even asked him a time or two if he wanted to pull him too.
MPG Topic: I had a 06 hemi and I was getting 9mpg around town. Plus it did not perform to the standards I was expecting. I up traded for my 07 ctd heavy duty and I am getting 17mpg on avg around town. Oh and I am street legal.
July 11, 2009Heck might as well look for a used kenworth or peterbilt. Before the diesel craze, i remember alot of farmers used the old 200hp 350 chevy to pull everything they had. Put pen and paper to the cost of the truck, the price of fuel/gas. I would figure twice the mpg between gas and diesel,as in 7mpg gas --14mpg diesel. What ever you get, good luck and happy camping.
July 11, 2009My thanks to all of you for your responses and advice.
We "bit the bullet" today and drove off with our new 2009 Ram 2500 QC 6.7l Cummins Diesel.
In case you're wondering, yes, it was expensive but we think it's going to be worth it.
Again, thanks to all of you for your input.
See ya' down the road...
July 11, 2009Congrats on your new Cummins.
July 11, 2009oh my god... just bought a 97 diesel dually. not pretty but a pulling monster. my buddy has a 24' pontoon. we pulled it down to lake talquin today i didnt even know it was back there. even passing was easy as pie. lol scared the crap outta the guy we passed.
July 12, 2009Congrats on the new truck!!
**side note: We had gasser farm trucks, but the diesel trucks out lasted them. Heck even the run about truck I had was a Nissian Diesel. Oh and it was way before the "diesel craze". Like 1983, thereabouts.
July 12, 2009Thats awsome. post some pics as soon as you can.
