November 16, 2005I just bought a '96 Dakota, 2wd short box, reg. cab 3.9L 5-spd. It has 3.55 gears. Its got about 79,000 miles. The first tank of gas I got 18, the next tank was 15, this time I gassed up, and got 13mpg. This seems pretty low to me, I don't drive it over 70mph, because it seems to be revving right along. 2600 rpms at 70. Anything I should look for to get better mileage? Any advice is appreciated.
November 17, 2005Seems odd there'd be such a drop in mpg's. I have noticed the last few weeks I am getting about 35 miles less per tank, however I know I have spend a little more time waiting in coffee shop drive thrus and also the last few weeks, have been very very windy around here (like 4 or 5 days of >25mph winds)... could your drop in mileage be similar?
November 17, 2005Has your driving pattern changed over the three tanks at all? Also, keep in mind it's getting colder and they're probably switching to the winter forulations of gasoline in most places.
November 17, 2005Well, if anything I think I've been driving it a little better, not much idle time, no hard acceleration. I just bought it and these are the only tanks of gas I've ran thru it. I'm pretty sure the current tank is worse than the others, I've got 56 miles on this tank, and the gauge reads 3/4. My '89 Ram 1/2 ton 4x4, is almost as good, on gas.
November 17, 2005mopar25x,
I have an 05 and its a pig on gas. Alot worse then my F-150 was. I read something a few days ago where someone is suing Dodge for misleading the DAK milage on the window sticker. They say his 2005 at best is getting 9 MPG and they cant figure out why. I fill my tank in my 05 every Sunday for the work week. I drive 23 miles each way to work 5 days a week. All of these miles are on the highway at 70 MPH. Some days I do the whole ride with the cruise set. I cannot make it to work on the 5th day without stopping for gas on the way, Its a pig but if I was worried about the mileage it was getting I wouldnt have bought it.
November 17, 2005My '99 Dak been getting right around 17mpg and I tend to be a lead foot.
November 17, 2005Well, thanks for the responses, I guess I'd be happy with 17 consistant. I've been thinking about putting a 440 in it in the next couple of years, I guess maybe I'll do it sooner, if the mileage is gonna suck anyhow.
November 17, 2005I get 16 pretty regular with my 33's and 4.10 gears
November 26, 2005I get about 20-22 mpg. but you might keep an eye on your gas tank. I had a tank about a month back where I got 11 mpg which is really low and the only driving I did was too and from work and occasionally over to the bf's house. What happened to me was somebody syphoned 2/3s of what was in my tank. If you don't have a locking gas cap, it might be a good investment. Somebody might be stealing your gas and that might explain the low mileage. I've lived in a bigger city and still was getting at least 20 mpg and now I live in a little town in podunk wyoming and still get the same amount. Just something to think about.
November 26, 2005Thanks for the heads up, but I'm pretty sure that isn't happening.
I put in new spark plugs, and a dist. cap, and rotor last week. The old plugs were worn to about .060" gap. I'm currently averaging between 13-15. I expected better mileage, but I guess....
Looks like this one might get the big block.
