August 19, 2005Does anyone know about the dakota 2.5L engine? Is it a good engine? Does it have good power for the size of the truck?

August 20, 2005I would avoid it, you'll never be happy with it.
August 20, 20052.5..hmmm aint the 4 cyl that was in some 97 or so daks?
August 20, 2005I was thinking in the way of fuel economy. What about the 3.9L v6?
August 20, 2005They discontinued the 4 banger in dakotas because it sucked. The 4.7 V-8 gets just as good of gas milage as the sixer. If you are looking for fuel economy you wont be driving a truck. I have been reduced to driving my wifes Neon back and forth to work because of gas prices. That little sucker gets 31.5 mpg.
August 20, 2005my 3.9 is gettin about 21 mpg
August 20, 2005The 2.5 was actually a Jeep motor that they put into the Dakota's after they bought out Jeep. It was fine for the Wranglers but was horrible in the Dakota's
August 20, 2005Gutless motor for a Dakota. You'll probably burn more gas cause you'll have to have it wide open most of the time. I'd go with the 3.9L V6 and 5 speed or a 4.7L V8.
August 20, 2005Blu98dakota, What kind of driving do you mostly do to get 21mpg? city? highway? and how do you drive it? And also, how big is the gas tanks on the dakotas?
I just cant get myself to buy a car, i just gotta have a truck. I was thinking about selling my truck for a dakota, if they get enough gas mileage to make it worth buying one. Mine gets about 13, and probably 11 in the city. If I could get 21 out of a dakota, that would make it cheaper to fill up.
August 20, 2005I don't think you can count on getting 21 consistently. 17-18 is fairly common with a 2WD Dakota though.a 4X4 will get somewhat less and if you add an automatic trans and all the power goodies it will take it down more.
August 20, 2005I was thinkin of a 3.9L v6 5 speed manual trans, 2wd regular cab.
August 20, 2005I normally get 18 MPG in mixed driving out of my 3.9L auto club cab...
my commute to work is about 12 miles through towns and stop lights max speed on that trip is about 50 mph, 5 days/week
my commute to see my girlfriend or my friends is usually more like 25-30 miles, mostly highway driving, and I try to keep the speed to about 65 mph, usually 3 or 4 days a week
more recently I have been trying to moderate my speed down in order to get better mileage...
my only mods are a home made CAI, Autolite 3923 spark plugs, and MSD 8.5 mm ignition wires
