ok guys im looking at getting another diesel. Im debating on auto or 6 speed..the years im looking at is a 2003-2005 4 door cummins. my goal is to get down to the 13's in the 1/4 mile.. I cant decide weather to get a auto or standard. whats the pro's and con's? the good thing about auto is it will hold the boost, rather than the standard you will loose pressure when shifting. but then again the standard trans will hold up longer. so Im not to sure, let me know what u guys have out there as far as HP and torque goes.Forums : Diesel Engines : Whats ur opinion? truck DECISION (26 Views)

I'm still stock as far as HP and TQ but I went with the 6 speed for the reliability issue. I had a 01 360 with an auto and put one tranny in at 18k and the dealer had to put another one in 300 miles after I traded it in with ~80k. I have heard that the 6 speed can hold just about anything as long as the clutch can hold it, but I am not sure. The auto will go out quick if you start upping the HP and TQ #'s without upgrading the tranny parts.January 28, 2007
If you plan on getting into the 13's you will have to do major tranny upgrades no matter what tranny you have. But I would opt for the auto just since they are a tad quicker shifting and if built up correctly will last a very long time.January 28, 2007
I've heard that a good way to look at it is you would need about 100 more h.p. in a standard tranny to keep up with a truck with an automatic....just what I heardJanuary 28, 2007
exactly. you will have a built tranny anyway. just get an auto and then you are guaranteed 13's with very little mods such as hot juice/EZJanuary 28, 2007
I have an idea....
Come out to a Texas A&M Diesel Unlimted get together...ride in a built auto...
or ride in a 6speed with mods....
then decide. You can even drive my auto....if your nice (LOL) I know of a modded 6speed you can drive too.
Theres lots of guys here in town with modded trucks....come out, talk to us, take a ride or drive, and then you decide.

so should he go for 04.4 or up?do you get more power out of chips due to the extra injection?
you can build more boost on a factory turbo
am i missing anything or wrong about anything
the 04.5 towing is different as well isnt it?

I am on my 2nd 6spd CTD. It is totally personal preference. Heck, my desire for manual trannies probably has more to do with the manual tranny hot rod cars & 4x4's I had as a kid more than any other sensible reason. If ya' wanna accelerate, an auto will help ya' be fast though.January 29, 2007
1990daksportI would say yes. seems that the 05's are really kickin it with the ability to have the true scary larry upgrade. Luken is in the low 12's, and i have heard of other common rails in the 11's

Cummins59-Scary Larry is FUN...too much fun actually. tires hate me....but drifting around corners at 35mph in 7000 pounds of truck is almost un-heard of!

i would go with the 6speed cause even in those years that your looking at dodge kinda fixed their tranny problem but if you want it fast go with the 6 speed and you will get that cummins screwing and now messing up the tranny![]() |
